The two-thirds rule

Size art to about two-thirds the width of the furniture below it. One large piece or a grouping treated as one — either way, aim for roughly 2/3 the width of the sofa, bed, or console beneath.
FurnitureTypical widthArt width (about 2/3)
Sofa (standard)84 in56 – 62 in
Loveseat60 in40 – 45 in
Queen bed (headboard)60 in40 – 45 in
King bed (headboard)76 in50 – 56 in
Console / sideboard48 in30 – 36 in
Mantel52 in34 – 40 in

Hanging height

Center the art about 57–60 inches from the floor — average eye level, and the height galleries use. Over furniture, leave 6–8 inches between the top of the piece and the bottom of the frame.

In rooms where people are mostly seated — a dining room or a reading nook — you can drop the center an inch or two so the art meets a seated eye line.

Standard print & frame sizes

Handy when you are matching art to a spot or building a set.

Print sizeBest for
8 x 10 inSmall accents, gallery-wall corners, shelves
11 x 14 inA single small wall or part of a grouping
16 x 20 inAbove a nightstand, in a hallway, in a set
18 x 24 inA statement piece for a medium wall
24 x 36 inOver a sofa, bed, or large empty wall

Gallery walls

Keep 2–3 inches between frames and plan the whole cluster as one shape — then size that shape to about 2/3 of the furniture or wall, just like a single piece.

These conventions trace back to how a picture frame is meant to present art at a comfortable viewing height.
